S5, EP4: ARIA Top 10 of 2009

CategoriesMusic tips.
03 Dec, 2024

On this episode of Project Engaged we have a very special guest – Celebrant John – to help us count down from 10 to 1 of the ARIA Top 100 charts of 2009!

John is a fellow “Triple Threat” as he is not only a celebrant but a DJ and MC too!

This quote from his website really resonates with us: “As a DJ, it’s more than just pressing play or being a human jukebox, my experience has taught me how to read a room.”.

And yes, we know last week we did say we were going to tackle 2005 in the next episode episode, but we couldn’t pass up the chance to have John on this poddy and we gave him the honour of choosing a banger year (and it is a BANGER!).

2009: A pretty good year for wedding bangers!

No spoilers, but it was a pretty good year overall!

If you want to check out the top 100 of charting songs of 2009, here’s the ARIA Top 100 Singles chart.

Aleks
Welcome to Project Engaged, a podcast for fun loving couples planning their non traditional wedding.

Eddy
We’re Eddy and Aleks, wedding DJs and celebrants who run a business in Melbourne called One More Song.

Aleks
On season five of Project Engaged, we decided to do something a bit different and bring it all back to the music.

Eddy
We’ll look at the most popular tunes in Australia by year, randomly choosing a different year for each episode.

Aleks
We’ll share our thoughts on the charts, plus tips for incorporating these songs into your wedding.

Eddy
For more wedding planning tips, please check out seasons one to four.

Eddy
For now, let’s get into the episode.

Aleks
All right.

Aleks
And we’re back for episode four.

Aleks
Already.

Aleks
We got there five.

Aleks
And today is a very, very exciting one because not just us waffling on about crap, we’ve got another person to do it with us.

Aleks
We’ve got a special guest today, celebrant John, who’s also a DJ and MC and a very good friend of ours.

Aleks
Welcome, John.

Eddy
Welcome.

John
Hi.

John
I’ve been waiting ages for this moment.

Aleks
Yeah, sorry, yeah, we wanted to keep the suspense going.

Aleks
We did.

Eddy
And we’re also recording this too.

John
Mine goes both ways, you two.

Eddy
Well, we’re also video recording this one as well, so we’re definitely breaking new territory.

Eddy
So we’re very excited.

Eddy
I’ve got to not pick my nose and things like that, I guess, on this episode.

Aleks
And also, like, look at the nodes.

Aleks
Look at John.

Aleks
Look at you.

Aleks
There’s a lot going on.

Eddy
There’s so much going on.

Aleks
How have you been, John?

Aleks
How are things?

John
I’m great.

John
How are you two?

Eddy
We’ve been good.

Eddy
They were really embracing.

Eddy
Good.

Eddy
We’re really embracing the busy season.

Eddy
Are you keeping your head above water?

John
Yeah, trying to.

John
It’s a lot. And I suppose, you know, the years, the last two years that we’ve all had. I suppose it’s good to take the foot off the pedal. But, yeah, so far, so good. I feel a bit more relaxed than I have in previous years.

Eddy
Excellent.

Aleks
I was reading your website earlier, which is great, by the way. Some great copy on there. And you’ve got over 18 years of experience.

John
Yeah, I gotta update that, really.

Eddy
Oh, you heard it here first.

Aleks
Now, everyone. John loves to remind us that he’s just a couple of years younger than us all the time, but yeah, sure, whatever. We’re all in the same decade, so. Yeah, it doesn’t really count.

Eddy
Who’s the oldest?

Aleks
Me.

Eddy
Yeah.

Aleks
Yeah.

Aleks
Okay.

Aleks
So Ed also likes to remind me that he’s younger.

John
I’ll take youngest.

John
Thank you.

Aleks
Okay.

Eddy
I’m somewhere in the middle.

Eddy
Damn.

Eddy
Middle child for the podcast.

Aleks
No worries.

Aleks
So what we’re going to do with today’s format, given that we’ve got a special guest, is we’re going to do the same thing. We’re going to go through the top 10, and we’ve actually given John the opportunity to pick our year.

Aleks
John, do you want to reveal the year that we’ll be covering?

John
Today is in the title, no doubt.

John
But it’s 2009.

John
As we go through the Aria charts, the Triple J Hottest 100, and the Billboard Top 100, you’ll see that it’s arguably the best year in recent times as far as music’s concerned.

Aleks
In recent times.

Aleks
He’s an old man, isn’t he?

Aleks
He was 15 years ago.

Aleks
Oh, wait, no.

Aleks
This is meant to be Evergreen content.

Aleks
If you’re listening in 2050, ignore me.

John
Yeah.

John
With our flying cars.

John
Remember that part?

Aleks
Yeah.

Eddy
Hopefully hoverboards as well.

John
Yeah, we’ll get there.

Aleks
You’ll be a very old man in 2050.

Aleks
Anyway, 2009.

Aleks
Yes, we were very excited.

Aleks
Now, Ed did lie on the last episode because he said that we would be doing 2005.

Aleks
Yeah.

Eddy
But that’s before we spoke to John about him guest appearing and.

Eddy
Yeah, so just forget what I said last episode.

Eddy
We’re doing 2009.

Eddy
We’ll come back to 2005.

Aleks
We’ll get there.

Aleks
We’ve got plenty of years to cover.

Aleks
All right, who wants to kick things off with what was happening in 2009?

Eddy
Oh, yes.

Aleks
So, okay, I love your fun facts.

Eddy
It’s unfortunate because every time we do this, I’m talking about people dying and someone very, very serious, significant died in 2009, and that was none other than Michael Jackson, the King of Pop, who died.

Eddy
He was 50 years old.

Eddy
So it was a very, very sad day.

Aleks
It was very sad.

Aleks
I remember it very well.

Aleks
Do you remember it, John?

John
I do.

John
If I’m not mistaken, it was the 25th of June.

Aleks
Oh, wow.

John
In 2009.

Eddy
We should have John on every episode, really.

Aleks
You know what?

Aleks
You can do all the fact checking because sometimes we just rely on Gemini and it’s full of crap.

John
It’s all up here somewhere.

Aleks
It’s all.

John
There’s a lot of going on up here.

John
But, yeah, MJ’s date of death’s up there, too, for some reason.

Eddy
Oh, yeah.

Eddy
We lost a good one.

Eddy
I mean, depends what you think about Jackson.

Eddy
Obviously, there’s, you know, there’s a lot of alleged goings on, but, you know, he’s still.

Eddy
I don’t think there’ll be another artist like Michael Jackson ever in history.

John
Interesting part about that is you could.

John
Have you fact checked that and you’ve decided to throw that in and then you’ve just.

John
You see the absolute range of emotions you’re going through right now, Ed.

Eddy
Yeah.

John
You’ve thrown that fact out there and then you’ve regretted it in the same breath.

Eddy
Yeah, well, exactly.

Eddy
That’s.

Eddy
That’s most of my daily thoughts.

Aleks
I have to ask John, are you getting from DJ perspective, are you getting MJ on your do not plays?

John
I never have.

John
Which is interesting because I know I see the two of you on the social media and that’s something that comes up regularly.

John
And people who.

John
I know for you two people who may be a bit controversial don’t necessarily get around.

John
But.

John
No, I.

John
I have.

John
I’ve never had a.

John
Don’t play mj.

Aleks
I don’t get it that often.

Aleks
Far less than other artists.

Aleks
There was that time, obviously, when the HBO doco came out, whenever that was a few years ago that it was like, absolutely not that year.

Aleks
And now.

Aleks
No, not much.

Aleks
Ed, you.

Eddy
Yeah, it was.

Eddy
I’ve had.

Eddy
I’ve had instances.

Eddy
Yes.

Eddy
During that time I had one.

Eddy
One party.

Eddy
It wasn’t a wedding.

Eddy
It was a party where I was playing some MJ early on to kind of set the vibe.

Eddy
And I had about three ladies run up to me and say something along the lines of, we don’t want to hear any music from paedophiles.

Eddy
So that really kind of shocked me into thinking twice for playing Michael Jackson.

Eddy
But I think, yeah, things have subsided.

Eddy
This weekend.

Eddy
I have a wedding and they want so much mj.

Eddy
So it’s.

Eddy
It’s great because his song’s awesome.

Aleks
Yeah.

John
Isn’t that interesting?

John
I suppose if we just put music aside for the.

John
For a second, how we can have an experience like that where someone expresses a dissatisfaction or a feeling towards something and then that just sticks with us for so long and we’re kind of burnt by.

John
By that sort of thing.

John
I’ve.

John
I’ve had a few sort of things like that recently and it rattles you a little bit and it’s hard to bounce back.

John
But I’m glad you’re back on.

John
Yeah.

John
If we can look at MJ as purely a musician.

Eddy
Yeah.

John
Phenomenal.

John
Like there’s some absolute Tunes from.

John
From him over.

John
Over the journey, and some still get a run.

John
Now, I probably pay a lot less than I used to, but.

Aleks
Yeah, you go through waves anyway, I think.

Aleks
And you’re right, those.

Aleks
Those experiences can sky you for a little bit and put you off for a while and then you kind of get back on the horse.

Eddy
I mean, if you’re happy to share.

Eddy
John, are there any particular songs or artists that you’ve had a similar experience with?

John
It’s a bit of a tricky one and it’s hard to sort of take the moral high ground with some of these things, but I suppose the obvious one is R.

John
Kelly.

John
I haven’t.

John
I haven’t played R.

John
Kelly since.

John
Since he shut the bed, but.

John
And then I suppose the other one.

John
Did he.

John
I didn’t really ever play any diddy anyway.

John
Apart from maybe shake your tail feather with Murphy Lee.

Eddy
Yep.

John
And who else was that with?

John
I can’t recall.

John
Remember MJ’s date of death, but I can’t remember Nelly.

John
Nelly.

Aleks
Did.

Eddy
He’s an interesting one because he.

Eddy
He has production credit on a lot of tracks as well.

Aleks
From different artists or just features.

Eddy
Yeah, yeah.

Eddy
So how we talked about this, where do you kind of, you know, draw the line?

Eddy
I’ve had instances where, coming back to Michael Jackson, now that I think about it, they’ve said no mj post 1992 or something bizarre like that, but the Jackson 5 is okay when he was a child.

Eddy
So, yeah, go figure.

John
Yeah.

John
And I suppose, yeah, the obvious one, too, which he almost got a free pass, was Chris Brown.

Aleks
He doesn’t come up.

Aleks
Yeah, he doesn’t come up that much.

John
No, everyone’s cool with that because.

John
Because they’re tuned.

Eddy
Yeah.

Aleks
So we.

Aleks
Yes, we.

Aleks
Yeah, we see a lot of what people consider to be morals and where they draw the line, that’s for sure.

Aleks
But, you know, each to their own.

Aleks
All right.

Aleks
Yes, Moving on.

Aleks
Yes.

Aleks
Death of mj.

Aleks
I think we’ve covered that well enough.

Eddy
And again, John, correct me if I am wrong about any of these happenings in 2009, but Bitcoin launched.

Eddy
Oh, I wish that that’s something that.

Aleks
You’D be excited about.

John
I saw a video the other day on TikTok where it was actually from 2009, and someone said, I don’t care what it takes.

John
You need to buy a dollar worth of bitcoin.

John
You mention that.

Aleks
Well, didn’t you lose some money on bitcoin?

Aleks
Or you sold your bitcoin?

Eddy
I made some money on bitcoin.

Aleks
But you sold it to buy a DJ.

Eddy
Yes, I bought a DJM S11 mixer.

Aleks
Yep.

Aleks
And where’s that now?

Aleks
Oh, you still have it.

Aleks
No, you sold it.

Eddy
Okay, I instantly regret it, but it’s.

Aleks
A whole other episode.

Eddy
I do agree.

Eddy
You know, it’s good to think about what we could have done if we’d known better.

Eddy
And it’s funny because the Aussie government, same year announced a major stimulus package.

Eddy
Kevin07’s make it rain money drop.

Eddy
I don’t know the GFC involved in that, but yeah, they he provide.

Eddy
I can’t even remember how much it was.

Aleks
Are you sure it was 2009?

John
Pick me.

John
Of course I know that.

John
950.

Eddy
Can you imagine if you put $950 into Bitcoin at that time, you’d be.

John
Oh, the other one I saw today was if you bought a.

John
If you instead of buying an iPhone.

John
I know it’s 2007 different year, but if you instead of buying an iPhone one in 2007 for 500 bucks, you put that money into Apple stock, that’d be worth $43,000 today.

John
So some rules apply.

Aleks
If only.

Eddy
If only, yeah.

Aleks
Yes, the GFC, of course.

Eddy
Yeah.

Aleks
So that was 2008.

Aleks
2007.

Eddy
I think it was 2008, but I’m not 100% sure.

Eddy
We’re not talking.

Aleks
Then K Rod was like, oh, we better give these poor Rossies some money.

Eddy
Fair enough, I think, because I was at university at the time and my housemate and I, we went straight to the bottle when we got our cheques.

Aleks
And I think I got an iPhone.

Aleks
No, I don’t know what happened.

Aleks
I can’t remember.

Aleks
2009.

Aleks
Big year.

Aleks
Okay.

Aleks
Any other deaths?

Eddy
No, no other deaths, really, but Barack Obama was sworn in as a 44th president.

Eddy
Yeah, well, that’s what it says.

John
I can help you out.

John
He was elected in 20th of January 2009.

John
He was.

John
He was inaugurated.

Eddy
There you go.

Eddy
See?

Aleks
All right, well, if you’ve just joined us, this is not a political podcast or his history historical podcast, It’s a music podcast.

Aleks
So shall we get into the.

Eddy
We’re just laying the groundwork.

Eddy
Yes, we shall.

Eddy
We shall.

Eddy
And because you are guest of honour, John, I’m going to let you start out with number 10.

Aleks
Okay.

John
We’re going with the aria charts to begin with.

Eddy
We are, yes.

John
Okay, so number 10 for the year ending 09 was the last day on Earth by Kate Miller.

John
Hike.

Aleks
Oh, dear, oh, dear.

John
Now, funny if.

John
Sorry, Alex, I don’t mean to cut you off.

John
That can I’ve started a new car playlist on Spotify recently.

John
Just the tunes I listen to in the car.

John
And the Last Day on Earth by Kate Miller Hike is in there.

Aleks
We listen to very different music.

Aleks
I have so many questions.

Aleks
Where do we start?

Eddy
What’s the first question?

Aleks
Why?

Eddy
Why?

John
So I can answer this.

John
I went and saw evermore in 2006 and Kate Miller Hike you as a support act.

John
I’d never heard of her beforehand and she was amazing.

John
So me as a 16 year old in 2006, I got to see.

John
Oh, no, no, I’ll keep it going, don’t worry.

John
And yeah, became a bit of a fan after that.

John
And her first two albums.

John
I know you said don’t speak about albums, but Little Eve and Curiosity of which the Last Day on Earth was was on.

John
I got Heavy Ro presentation on CD in my car and I’ll listen to that stuff a fair bit.

Aleks
So it’s good that we have guests because, like, it keeps things a bit more balanced.

Aleks
Of course, it’s not just me talking trash about all the tracks.

Eddy
Well, my.

Eddy
My big question is, was it a burnt CD or was it the actual album?

John
No, it was the actual album.

John
And I was actually going to go through all my CDs before and get as many of the CDs as I could.

John
Singles and albums from 09.

John
But I forgot all about it.

John
But I still have it.

John
I’ve got the real album, Curiosa.

Aleks
I wrote down at least she’s Aussie, which I can’t say for a lot of the top 10.

Eddy
No, no, you said at least she’s Aussie in a question mark.

Aleks
At least she’s like.

Aleks
That’s like me being like, maybe I should say something positive.

Aleks
No.

Aleks
But I have to say.

Aleks
Okay, putting aside.

Aleks
Because obviously we want to talk about wedding playability.

Aleks
Yeah.

Aleks
Putting that aside.

Aleks
I mean, it is a depressorino song, let’s be honest.

Aleks
It’s about a breakup.

Aleks
But it is a good song.

Aleks
It’s a nice song.

Eddy
So you’re coming around.

Aleks
No, no.

Aleks
I was gonna say maybe for like a divorce party.

Eddy
I haven’t played one of those yet.

Aleks
Like an entrance song for a divorce party.

John
How many of those are there?

Aleks
Yeah, I know.

Aleks
Not enough.

Aleks
I mean, everyone knows.

Eddy
Rewind.

Aleks
I’m saying it’d be a good, you know, source of business.

Aleks
No, yeah.

Aleks
I mean, wedding playability.

Aleks
No, you’ve.

Eddy
You’ve never played it at a wedding, John.

John
No, no, no, no.

John
Funnily enough, no.

Eddy
Okay.

Eddy
Is there anything else that we need to say about number 10 before we move on.

John
No, it’s.

John
It’s nice to have it there, but.

John
But number 10 is, is probably pretty generous.

John
Yeah, yeah, great.

John
Great song.

John
But in terms of longevity, I’d be one of a handful of people that would still be giving it a run in the car.

John
Now, from a wedding perspective or event perspective, new.

Eddy
And were you surprised that it reached the top 10?

John
Yeah, yeah.

John
Reading that, reading it before particularly, you know, I know we’ve spoken about on, on previous episodes, but the formats available at the time, you could still get CD singles at the time, album sales were massive at jv, Kmart, Sanity, hmb, all those kind of places.

John
So the fact that there was such a breadth of music of, you know, success within that year itself, to see that as number 10 for the year ending charts is kind of bananas, really.

John
Particularly with what’s to come.

Aleks
Yes.

John
Yeah.

Aleks
All right, so what do we give it for wedding playability?

Aleks
I’ll give it a zero out of ten.

Eddy
Zero?

Aleks
Yes.

John
Wow.

Eddy
Not even on the ironic.

Aleks
No.

Eddy
Okay.

John
No, I’m going with the 0 too.

Eddy
I guess I’m gonna have to go with the zero as well because I can’t be the odd one out.

Aleks
Here, write these down.

Aleks
Oh, you’re allowed to have an opinion.

Eddy
Thank you.

Aleks
I just hope that Kate Miller Heidke’s not listening to this, but if you.

Eddy
Are listening, Kate, just let us know.

John
We’ll send her a transcript.

Aleks
I was going to say John’s got.

Aleks
John’s got amazing SEO on his website.

Aleks
I mean, you put in any keyword related to anything to do with Melbourne wedding celebrants or DJs and he comes up in the top five with his various domains.

Aleks
So she could maybe come across it if she’s.

John
She’s getting married in the market.

Aleks
If she’s in the market.

Eddy
Do you think she won her own music at her wedding then?

Aleks
That’s load, isn’t it?

Aleks
All right, number nine, are we gonna let John.

Eddy
Alex can take this one.

Eddy
We’ll go around in circles.

Eddy
Actually, we’ll save the number one for John, given he’s the guest.

Aleks
He’s making me laugh because it features.

Aleks
I know it’s evergreen content, but this artist features extremely heavily in my wedding tomorrow.

Aleks
Like ridiculous.

Aleks
Number nine is Tick Tock by Kesha.

Aleks
Oh, Tick Tock.

Aleks
Before it was Tick Tock, the social media platform.

Aleks
Tick Tock.

Aleks
Kesha says the inspiration behind the song came from coming home half drunk and stumbling after a night out of partying.

Aleks
Have you ever done that, John?

Eddy
Oh, on the record.

Eddy
You too.

John
Can I.

John
You’ve been there with me as I’ve.

John
As I’ve been in such a state.

Aleks
We have.

John
I haven’t gone down the Brushing the teeth with a bottle of Jack, but probably not been far off at different stages of my life.

Aleks
Yes.

Aleks
The breakfast ciders and the breakfast beers.

Eddy
Yeah.

Eddy
And this song does feature an artist that we just spoke about, P.

Eddy
Diddy, and she’s recently changed the lyrics of the song.

Eddy
Do you know about this, Alex?

Aleks
Naughty.

Aleks
Nice.

Aleks
Changed the lyrics.

Eddy
John, do you know this?

John
I’m aware.

John
Yeah.

John
Yeah.

Eddy
Please enlighten us.

John
Subtle change.

John
So the.

John
The lyrics from the 2009 version are wake up in the morning feeling like P.

John
Diddy.

John
And as of recently, they wake up in the morning.

John
I don’t know what the next word is, but it’s pgd.

Eddy
Yeah, I think that’s what it is.

Eddy
And maybe.

Eddy
I don’t know, but yeah, it’s.

Eddy
I don’t know about subtle change, but yeah.

John
All right, now you’re right.

Aleks
I have to say.

Aleks
Okay, so what happens then?

Aleks
We play it.

Aleks
We don’t worry about it.

Aleks
Because that’s the first line of the.

Aleks
Of the song.

Aleks
Mentions P.

Aleks
Diddy.

Eddy
Does PD P.

Eddy
Diddy have anything to do with the song besides just showing up in the film clip and being shouted out like, did he have anything to do with the production of the song?

John
There is a.

John
He says, yo, what up, girl?

John
After she says that.

John
So there is a vocal cameo in there.

John
But I would encourage everyone to go and get the new version.

John
And I suppose there’s a whole other ethical side of things for music with Kesha.

John
So if you get the new version, she gets the royalties, whereas she didn’t get the full amount before P.

John
Diddy.

Eddy
Got some of it.

Eddy
Two lines, two words worth or.

Aleks
Yes.

Aleks
Yeah, that’s a whole thing.

Aleks
Do I like.

Aleks
Now, personally, this is not a song I would choose to listen to in my spare time, but it goes off at weddings.

Eddy
Yeah.

Aleks
For the right crowd, obviously.

Aleks
John, thoughts?

John
Yeah, 100.

John
I don’t play it all that often.

John
I do play some of our other stuff, but Tick tock.

John
I don’t.

John
I don’t reckon I’ve ever rolled it out and it’s.

John
It’s had a bad reaction.

John
It’s always something that is well received.

Aleks
And if you’re a good dj, you wouldn’t be rolling out tick tock unless you were pretty confident that it would get an okay reaction.

Aleks
It’s not one of those songs.

Aleks
It’s like a safe bet I would say, but for the right crowd.

Eddy
Do you prefer Tick Tock over, say, a timber?

Aleks
I prefer a timber.

John
Timber.

John
Timber is not in the heavy rotation, I’ll tell you that.

Aleks
Keshe is not in the heavy rotation.

Aleks
I’m not gonna lie.

Aleks
I wouldn’t go out of my way to play Kesha.

Aleks
Really has to be requested by the couple.

John
What about Die Young?

Aleks
Would not play it.

John
No.

John
Okay, interesting.

Eddy
I think I probably played Tick Tock more than I played Timber.

Aleks
Same.

Aleks
Yeah, yeah, but I’m saying my personal preference.

Aleks
But Young crowd definitely goes off.

Aleks
See, I feel funny about the scale of wedding playability because I’m like, how can I give a good score to a song where I just like.

Eddy
But you’ve got to think about the crowd at a wedding.

Aleks
I should stop being so selfish.

Aleks
Yes.

Aleks
For this podcast.

Aleks
True, true, true.

Aleks
So, John, what would you give it out of 10 for wedding playability?

John
Wedding playability.

John
I’m gonna go with a seven.

Eddy
That’s solid.

Aleks
Great.

Eddy
Yeah, I think I’m gonna go a seven as well.

Eddy
Geez, you’ve got to be careful.

Eddy
Yeah.

Eddy
The eights, nines, and tens that.

Eddy
Well, we haven’t given out a 10 yet.

Eddy
Maybe it’s.

Eddy
Maybe it’s the episode today that gets.

Eddy
Someone gets a 10.

Eddy
Something gets a 10.

John
Looking ahead, I reckon I’ve got a 10, but I don’t want to get too excited, really.

Aleks
I’m just having a look.

Aleks
Oh, yeah.

Aleks
Okay.

Aleks
Yes.

Aleks
I think I know which one you’re talking about.

Aleks
Completely.

Aleks
Just making assumptions.

Aleks
Okay.

Eddy
All right.

Aleks
Seven.

Aleks
Seven out of ten.

Aleks
Not bad, Kesha.

Aleks
Good on you.

Eddy
Good on you, Kesha.

Eddy
Okay, so we’re going to move on to number eight on the 09 ARIA charts, and that is Meet Me Halfway by the Black Eyed Peas.

Aleks
Black eyed peas, the ultimate 2000 2010.

Eddy
Yeah.

John
In charge, weren’t they, at that point in.

John
In history?

Eddy
Really were.

Eddy
And they’ve made a bit of resurgence, I think, with.

Eddy
With wedding crowds in the last year or so.

Eddy
I’m getting a lot more requests for Black Eyed Peas.

Aleks
Massively.

Aleks
Massively.

Aleks
I would say also appear heavily on the do not play.

Aleks
So people feel pretty strongly either way I feel about Black Eyed Peas.

Aleks
Yeah, there’s no real.

Aleks
Like, they’re all right because I like that.

Eddy
Because they’re passionate.

Eddy
Either way.

Aleks
I like that too.

John
Yeah.

Aleks
What.

Aleks
How do you feel about this particular song, John?

John
Oh, for me, Meet Me Halfway.

John
It’s not something that I don’t believe I’ve ever played it publicly.

John
No, it’s.

John
It’s okay.

John
It’s cool.

John
That particular album.

John
Yeah, I’ve got it on vinyl.

John
I listen to it, you know, I’m happy.

John
I don’t.

John
It’s not a skippable track by any means, but it’s.

John
It’s not a banger.

Aleks
Yeah, yeah.

Aleks
Now, what was that mashup recently that was viral on Tick Tock?

Aleks
It was not viral, but, you know, one of the trending audio tracks, it was Meet Me Halfway with I Follow Rivers.

Eddy
Oh, okay.

Aleks
Do we not.

John
I haven’t heard this one.

Aleks
That is really good.

Aleks
Remember, you had it requested by one of your couples recently?

Eddy
I had those two songs separately requested, but not their mashup.

Aleks
Oh, no.

Aleks
I said do.

Aleks
You should.

Aleks
Anyway, we couldn’t source it.

Aleks
They’re really hard to get those.

Eddy
You have to make them yourself, which is a lot easier these days with the way that software’s going.

Aleks
But everything moves too quickly.

Aleks
If it’s 2050, maybe TikTok’s not even around and you’re listening to this, but everything moves too quickly to create a mashup for every single trending audio.

John
And by the time you’ve got it.

John
Yeah, you’re up.

John
By the time you’ve got it again.

Aleks
You guys didn’t even know about the one that I was talking about.

Aleks
Probably lasted two days, and I happened to hear it on those two days, so there you go.

Aleks
I personally love this song, but I wouldn’t play it at a wedding.

Eddy
No, I think it’s like a.

Eddy
I think it’s almost like a bar song or something, like in the background or.

Aleks
Yeah, even, like.

Aleks
Even, like, say, like, for background.

Aleks
The background kind of time before.

Aleks
Dance floor at a wedding.

Aleks
I probably.

Aleks
Probably wouldn’t play it either, even though I really like it personally.

Aleks
But.

Aleks
Yeah, no.

Eddy
Okay, so wedding playability then.

Aleks
And I’ll give it a two.

Eddy
Oh, okay.

John
I’m gonna back the trend a little bit because we’ve all been in agreement so far.

John
I’m gonna go with a.

John
With a four.

Eddy
Oh, I’ll go with the three, then.

Eddy
I’ll be right in the middle.

Aleks
I’m writing these scores down, but I’m not writing who’s saying what.

Aleks
That’s okay.

Aleks
We can do a little maths later on.

Aleks
Beautiful.

Eddy
All right, number seven, you’re up, John.

John
I’m up.

John
Halo by Beyonce.

John
Yeah.

John
Tune, tune.

John
Like, really cool.

John
And I was actually watching a tick tock the other day about the writer of this song saying they were really trying to manufacture a love song for Beyonce, and they.

John
They succeeded.

John
It was one of her most successful tracks, apparently, which I find hard to believe.

Aleks
Okay.

Aleks
Do you see this a lot in Ceremonies as the Isle song?

John
No, I don’t believe.

John
You know, similar to some of the other stuff.

John
I don’t believe I’ve ever played it, but I can see how it would definitely have a place in like a first dance, for example, or ceremony type.

Aleks
Yeah.

John
Type music.

Aleks
But, yeah, processional.

Aleks
I hate.

Aleks
I hate the word.

Aleks
I hate the word.

Aleks
Makes you sound like you’re in church.

Aleks
The ceremony.

Aleks
I just say the aisle song and the finish song, I think.

Aleks
Yeah.

Aleks
I don’t know.

Aleks
It’s, you know, it’s.

Aleks
It’s a romantic song for Beyonce.

Aleks
What can I say?

Aleks
I’m not Beyonce’s biggest fan, so I’ve got to take myself out of that.

Aleks
But I don’t know if I would play it unless it was a key moment song.

Eddy
I would agree with that.

Eddy
Yes.

Eddy
Or it could be a request for like a real belter later in the night.

Eddy
We’ve spoken about this on previous episodes on.

Eddy
On some of the songs that may not be a floor to the floor, Four to the floor, rather like filler.

Eddy
But, yeah, it just.

Eddy
Just goes off later on in the night and we’re finding more and more of those songs that are coming up.

Aleks
Yeah, it is a kind of arms around each other kind of single.

John
Yeah, certainly for the right age group.

John
If.

John
If a group went through year 12 with that song being one of their key songs, you can imagine how that friendship group would all get around it at the end of a wedding, you know, in that last 15 minutes or so as a major sing along, but quite niche.

Aleks
So.

Aleks
Yeah, it is, it is.

Aleks
It has its moments for a wedding, but I would give it a three.

Eddy
I’ve actually got a question on these types of songs for you, John.

Eddy
So say, for instance, a couple comes to you and says, we love Beyonce’s Halo for argument’s sake, and we do want it at the height of the night.

Eddy
Are you going to maybe announce that it’s a big number for everyone just to give it context.

Eddy
Context.

Eddy
And so the other.

Eddy
So the parents might understand or some of the guests that weren’t in that core group?

John
It’s a really good question.

John
And I.

John
I don’t.

John
I don’t know exactly how I’d handle it.

John
I suppose I’d be wanting.

John
I’d be, you know, just double checking with the couple that that is the significant song for them and.

John
And their friends and family.

John
But possibly, yeah, like if it was something that, you know, you wanted to really make a point of the fact that it had that significance and you didn’t want people to just fuck off from the dance floor.

Eddy
Yeah.

Aleks
Because I think.

Aleks
Wise.

Eddy
Wise.

John
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

John
You probably safeguarded a little bit by making that announcement.

Aleks
Yeah.

John
But I suppose, you know, if they’re.

John
If the couple are that adamant about it, I’d trust them as well.

John
Yeah.

John
They know.

John
They guess better than I ever will.

Aleks
Yeah.

Aleks
I find guests are quite brutal.

Aleks
So I would tend to.

Aleks
If there is a bit of a rogue request from the couple, I tend to get on the mic just to say.

Aleks
Just to save your own special one sort of thing, basically.

Aleks
To save my own neck.

Aleks
Because particularly if you’ve had a really good night and you’ve had a good run and you’ve been playing bangers and then suddenly you drop some random ballad.

Aleks
I think especially because we don’t tend to play ballads unless.

Aleks
Yeah, it’s really late in the night.

Aleks
It’s been a request for a sing along, so I would definitely announce it.

John
I can’t see too many couples going down that path with Halo.

John
Yeah.

John
But, yeah, it’s an interesting one.

John
But.

John
Yeah, no, I.

John
I probably would after.

John
Particularly after having this conversation.

John
I’d be.

John
I’d be putting that layer of armour on with getting the microphone on and saying, yeah, yeah, this wasn’t me.

John
This is.

John
If it goes well, it’s me.

John
If it.

John
If it doesn’t, it’s.

Aleks
I like that.

Aleks
Yeah.

Eddy
Yeah.

Eddy
It’s probably more like an.

Eddy
The one I’m getting quite a lot lately is Unwritten something.

Eddy
Something like that.

Eddy
But that’s.

Aleks
Unwritten is popular.

John
Yes.

Eddy
Yeah.

Aleks
It’s not unexpected.

Eddy
Yeah, exactly.

Eddy
That’s the difference.

Aleks
Unless you play it and it just.

Aleks
No one.

Aleks
But like oldies on the dance floor.

Eddy
Yeah.

Aleks
Which obviously you would.

Eddy
You have to choose battles.

Aleks
Yeah.

Aleks
You have to choose.

John
Well, Unwritten is one of those ones that you can play just before the dance floor kicks off and that can kind of organically build that.

Eddy
Yeah.

John
Halo.

John
I don’t know if it’s got the same kind of vibe to it.

John
Probably not, but I’m going to give it a go at some point and I’ll.

John
I’ll feed it back to you.

Eddy
Please let us know how it went.

Aleks
I’m giving it a three.

John
John Wedding Playability.

John
Yeah, yeah.

John
I’ll go with three as well.

Eddy
I will buck the trend this round.

Eddy
I’ll give it a 4 because it might have that just secret power at the last sort of half an hour of the night.

Aleks
Any song could have a secret power that you don’t know about.

Aleks
Secret.

Eddy
Just let me give it a four.

Aleks
All right, fine.

Aleks
You can be controversial and interesting and different.

Aleks
Cool.

Aleks
Number six.

Aleks
Whose turn?

Aleks
Mine?

Eddy
I believe so.

Eddy
Yes.

John
Appointment.

Eddy
So let’s just see those who are listening.

Eddy
Will Alex like this track or not?

Eddy
Based on her sigh.

Aleks
Like it like that by Guy Sebastian.

Aleks
Look, I don’t want to be un Australian, but I’ve written down fun fact.

Aleks
Alex just doesn’t like Guy Sebastian.

Aleks
I don’t know what it is, but you.

Eddy
We’ve spoken about Guy Sebastian.

Eddy
I don’t know if it was.

Eddy
Was it on this podcast, but you were saying he reinvented himself.

Eddy
He’s.

Aleks
I said he looks good.

Eddy
Yeah.

Aleks
So that doesn’t mean I like him.

Eddy
Oh, okay.

Aleks
Purely aesthetic.

Aleks
I think he’s.

Aleks
Yeah, he’s reinvented his look.

Eddy
Yes, but I know the truth look a little bit.

Aleks
You know the truth, But I know the truth.

Aleks
So.

Aleks
No, but you know, as for this.

Aleks
No, never.

Aleks
No.

Aleks
John.

Aleks
Help.

John
Interesting.

John
And I suppose I.

John
I, you know, I’ll preface by saying that a couple of mine at the moment they’re entering.

John
Entering the room to their reception to Like it like that by Guy Sebastian, which is pretty cool because it’s not something I played before.

Aleks
Yeah.

John
And it’s got a little bit of a.

John
I don’t even know how to describe the.

John
The intro part.

John
It’s this instrumental intro.

John
It almost sounds like a Nokia ringtone.

John
And my plan with that is to loop it and speak over the top of the loop as I introduce everyone into the room and then play it like that or even slam into the chorus.

John
That’s not bad.

John
It’s just something I’d never considered to be something that I would play when I did that.

Eddy
I think it’s a fun, happy song.

Eddy
Like, if you take away the fact that it is Guy Sebastian.

Eddy
Alex.

Eddy
I.

Eddy
I put it in the same basket as we spoke about this too.

Eddy
Happy by Pharrell Justin Timberlake’s Can’t Stop the Feeling.

Aleks
That kind of more localised.

Eddy
Yeah.

Eddy
Almost like.

Eddy
Like a kid set sort of song as well.

Eddy
Because it is fun, happy, pretty.

Eddy
I don’t know.

Eddy
Just.

Eddy
It’s kind of nice.

John
Bubblegum.

John
Bubblegum.

John
Commercialised pop.

Eddy
Yeah.

John
Yeah.

Eddy
Onoffensive.

Aleks
Okay.

Aleks
You know what?

Aleks
It was played a lot.

Aleks
A lot.

Aleks
And I don’t know if this is why, but apparently before it was released in Australia, it was chosen as a theme song for the U.S.

Aleks
nBC network’s summer promotional campaign.

Eddy
Wow.

Aleks
So for me, it’s got that it’s very specific, but I feel like I’ve heard it played over and over.

Aleks
You know when you hear those songs like.

Aleks
Like Fleetwood Mac songs ruined by car ads.

Eddy
Yeah.

Aleks
Not ruined, but you hear them over and over again.

Aleks
Or like, I love it.

Aleks
Kfc.

Aleks
I don’t think that’s ruined that feeling.

Aleks
No, it hasn’t ruined it for me.

Aleks
But I’m saying it’s got that kind of like.

Aleks
Oh, I feel like I, like, heard over and over and it was linked to a commercial and that annoys me.

Eddy
It probably was linked to an Aussie commercial as well.

Eddy
Yeah.

Aleks
Yes.

John
It’s interesting.

John
On Tick Tock at the moment, there’s a big pile on one of my favourite bands, Lawrence.

John
It’s a brother and sister out of America and they’ve got a song and I just can’t think of the name of it off the top of my head at the moment.

John
But everyone’s piling up, piling on, saying it just sounds like an Old Navy ad or a TV ad.

John
And it’s almost like it’s been manufactured to be on an ad and some music just sounds like that.

John
And I’d agree, you know, I don’t have.

John
I don’t hate, like it like that by any means.

John
But yes, it does have that sort of commercialised commercial sound to it.

Aleks
I feel that way about Guy Sebastian in general because he very manufactured.

Eddy
Well, he was on a TV show.

Aleks
I’m right.

Aleks
I’m very unforgiving with this stuff.

Aleks
I’m so sorry, guys.

Aleks
Sebastian, if you’re listening to this.

Eddy
So are you Team Noel?

Aleks
No.

Aleks
Why do I have to.

Aleks
I don’t.

Aleks
Do I have to figure out.

Eddy
Yeah, I kind of am Team Shannon.

Eddy
No, just quietly.

John
I feel we all were at that at that point in time.

John
Whereas if we had our time again.

John
I know.

John
I feel Australians have got a little bit more somehow a little bit more sophisticated over time.

John
And we probably would go the Guy Sebastian way now.

Eddy
But it depends where you’re from.

John
I think we were all very patriotic and it was before the Cronulla riots and we all wanted channel to win.

Eddy
Yep.

John
Our identity has changed a little bit since then.

Eddy
Yep.

Eddy
Yep.

Aleks
Welcome to a history of 2009.

John
That was 2003.

Aleks
2003.

Aleks
Oh, I don’t know.

Aleks
Okay, so.

Aleks
Wedding playability.

Aleks
John.

John
I’ll.

John
I’ll split the difference at 5.

John
Yeah, it has its place.

John
And.

John
And I’m totally.

John
I totally love the idea that one of my couples has come up with for their intro.

John
I can’t see you Know, absolutely.

John
You know, bringing the vibe on a D on a D floor.

John
But, yeah, it has its place.

John
If it’s used as a formality, for sure.

Aleks
I’ll give it a four.

Eddy
I’m gonna give it a five.

John
That was so diplomatic from you, Alex Mack.

John
I did not expect a 4.

Aleks
As soon as it came out of my mouth, I was like, why did I do that?

John
Do you want to do Try again?

Aleks
Let’s see, what did I give Halo?

Aleks
No, no, I’m sorry, Guy Sebastian.

Aleks
I’ll.

Aleks
I’ll do better.

Aleks
It is catchy.

Aleks
It is catchy.

Eddy
Yeah.

Aleks
Yeah, sure.

Eddy
All right, four it is.

Aleks
Let’s move on and forget about that one.

Eddy
It’s already up to five.

Aleks
Yeah.

Aleks
Is it your turn?

Eddy
I think it is, yes.

Aleks
Terrible at this.

Aleks
I don’t know.

Aleks
I can’t keep up.

Eddy
One of your favourite artists, Flowrider.

Eddy
So it’s right round.

Eddy
Flowrider featuring Kesha.

Aleks
It was the year of Kesha, wasn’t it, really?

Eddy
Flowrider had a few, you know, bangers throughout those years, too.

Eddy
So.

Aleks
All right.

Aleks
And what do you think of when you hear this song?

Eddy
Do you want to all say it at the same time?

Eddy
The Hangover.

John
Oh, My mom was like, oh, of course.

John
The photo montage at the end.

John
Oh, my God.

John
Wow.

Aleks
Are you one of those people who falls asleep before the end of the movie?

John
No, no, I remember it well.

John
It was just.

John
Yeah.

John
There’s a period of my life that I wasn’t always sober for.

John
And, yeah, watching the Hangover fell within that.

John
That period of time.

Eddy
Good movie.

Eddy
I enjoyed it.

Aleks
Yeah, it is.

Aleks
And that’s a fun photo montage at the end.

Aleks
This is probably not a Flow Rider song that I would choose if I were playing Flow Rider.

Eddy
What’s your number one?

Eddy
Flow Rider.

Aleks
Low.

Eddy
Low.

Eddy
Yeah.

Aleks
John.

Aleks
John’s eyes just went wide.

John
It’s gonna be the Club Can’t Handle Me or what’s the other one?

John
Good Feeling.

Eddy
Yep, Good Feeling.

Eddy
It’s.

Eddy
It’s a good mix with Avicii levels actually, too.

Eddy
So you can drop it in.

Aleks
See, I’m like, if I have both songs requested, if I have good feeling and levels, I’ll always play level.

John
Oh, no, there is one more.

John
I’ve got to just jump on the old Spotify and see what it is.

John
There’s one more of my house, maybe.

Eddy
Oh, yeah, yeah.

John
Let’s go with my house.

Eddy
That.

Eddy
That reminds me of a car advert.

Eddy
My house.

Aleks
I can’t play that.

Aleks
It reminds me of the ABS track in Body.

Aleks
Les Mills.

Aleks
Body pump class.

Aleks
Oh, cannot play that.

Aleks
No, I can’t play that song.

Eddy
So he had a lot of hits.

Eddy
So this one.

Eddy
Yeah.

Eddy
I can’t say I play it at all at weddings.

Eddy
I can’t say I’ve ever played it at weddings.

Aleks
And it’s obviously based around the 1985 hit used to Be Me Round by Dead or Alive.

John
Yeah, I did.

Aleks
Or Alive, which I would rather play.

Eddy
Did he get.

Eddy
Okay.

Eddy
The okay to sample that or to.

Eddy
Or did he get sued?

Aleks
I think he got.

Aleks
I never heard about him being sued.

Eddy
Okay.

Eddy
Because we were talking about this recently, like a different court case.

Aleks
No, that was him.

Aleks
That was him getting ripped off by some energy drink.

Eddy
Okay.

Aleks
Company or whatever it is.

John
I’m gonna fact cheque that because I don’t recall that either.

John
But.

Eddy
Yeah, well, John is fact checking.

Eddy
I would say I prefer the Dead or Alive version of this song over there over the Flow Rider.

Eddy
But hey, I think it does have its place here and there.

Eddy
It’s something that, if I were to play it, I wouldn’t play it for very long.

Eddy
I might give it a chorus or something and then get on out because I don’t think people will be hanging out for a whole three and a half minutes of this one.

John
I have fact checked.

John
And yes, Flow Rider did indeed get permission.

John
There you go.

John
Using elements from Dead or Alive’s 1984 song, You Spin Me Round in his 2009 hit Right Round, the chorus of Right Round heavily interpolates the original track and as a result, members of Dead or Alive accredited as songwriters on Flow Riders version.

Eddy
Excellent.

Eddy
Well, he’s very above board, Mr.

Eddy
Flow.

Aleks
I know.

Aleks
And people give him about it online because they’re like, he’s so uncontroversial.

Aleks
Boring.

Aleks
It’s like, oh, sorry, an artist can’t just like be an artist with hits and not cause offence or harm to anyone.

Aleks
Sorry.

John
I’m.

John
I’m very happy that Mr.

John
Ryder has his cheques and balances in place.

Aleks
Yes, Mr.

Aleks
Ryder.

Aleks
Well done.

Aleks
I.

Aleks
I agree with Ed.

Aleks
I wouldn’t.

Aleks
I wouldn’t play for very long.

Aleks
Dip in and out.

Aleks
Would I play it?

Aleks
Might play it for my Kesha Mad couple.

Eddy
Yes, you should, definitely.

Aleks
So I would jot that down because that probably wasn’t in my thing.

Aleks
I would give this a 4 out of 10 for wedding playability.

Aleks
John.

John
It’s not one of mine.

John
I’m.

John
It’s going to be my lowest so far when they were actually.

John
No.

John
What was the lowest?

John
Last day on Earth for playability.

John
Yeah.

John
With the two for Right Round.

John
It doesn’t do it for me.

Aleks
No, I want to take mine back.

Aleks
FOMO.

Eddy
I’m not going to say 3.

Eddy
I will say.

Eddy
I will say 4.

Eddy
And the reason why is that you may play at a wedding one day and it might just be like a sleeper hit because people just forgotten about.

Aleks
It and then from then on you’ll just keep playing it.

John
Would it be fair to say, though, that if you go through history, it’s no one ever.

John
No one has ever had that as their favourite song.

John
Right Round has never been anyone’s favourite.

Aleks
Song ever in the history of Earth.

Aleks
Probably.

Aleks
You’re probably right.

Eddy
Yeah.

Aleks
Interesting.

Aleks
Unless you’re like a.

Aleks
An enormous Hangover fan.

Eddy
Maybe you were the person that chose that song for the movie Hangover and then.

Aleks
Yes, true.

Eddy
Can we fact cheque that one?

John
Yeah, yeah.

John
Give me six to eight weeks.

Aleks
All right, we’ll come back to you on that one.

Aleks
So wait.

Aleks
With baited breath.

Aleks
Awesome.

Aleks
All right, number four.

Aleks
I think it’s my turn or John’s turn.

Aleks
John’s turn, actually.

John
Is it me?

Aleks
Yeah, it is you.

John
We’re back to the Black Eyed Peas for this one.

John
This is a.

John
This is a very much a step above Meet Me Halfway.

John
We’ve got Boom Boom Pow at number four.

Eddy
Alex and I just laughing to each other because you have to cheque this out, John.

Eddy
And anyone that’s listening as well.

Eddy
There is a Saturday Night Live skit of the Black Eyed Peas writing this song and a few other songs that they’ve written and it’s just hilarious.

Aleks
Yeah, it’s got Lizzo in it as one of them.

Eddy
Yeah.

Aleks
It’s so good.

Eddy
It’s relatively recent.

Aleks
You know what, to remind me in not the show notes, but we put up a blog post for every episode.

Aleks
I’m going to.

Eddy
Yes.

Aleks
Put the link in the link.

Aleks
No.

Aleks
I’ll even embed the video into the blog post.

Eddy
Please do.

Aleks
Bit of code.

Eddy
Yep.

Aleks
Wham, bam in bed.

Aleks
Boom, boom, pow.

Aleks
I love this song.

Aleks
I think this is such a banger.

Aleks
Absolute banger.

Eddy
Ed, I.

Eddy
Yeah, I like it.

Eddy
I don’t play it as much as I should, to be honest, but it’s.

Eddy
Yeah, I should be.

Eddy
I should be putting on relatively heavy rotation, particularly nowadays because the age group that is getting married grew up to this kind of stuff.

Aleks
Yeah.

Aleks
John, do you play this much?

John
I do.

John
It gets a bit of a play.

John
And I suppose, you know, one of the all time great poets of our generation, Stacey Ferguson from the Black Eyed Peas, had the famous line, I’m so 3008.

John
You’re so 2000 late.

John
Like, it doesn’t get better than that from a songwriting perspective, does it?

Eddy
I love that you’ve referred to as Sophie Ferguson.

John
Stacy.

Eddy
Stacy.

Eddy
Stacy Ferguson.

Eddy
Other than just Fergie.

Aleks
Fergie, yeah.

Eddy
Because I had to think about that for a second.

Aleks
Who this one slaps, as you would say, Ed, when you’re using cool young people language.

Aleks
I also would like to play it more.

Aleks
It’s one of those songs that for some reason, because I haven’t played a lot, I kind of forget about and I end up playing my humps a lot more.

Eddy
Also slaps.

Aleks
Also slaps.

Aleks
You know that.

Aleks
That mashup that I found, the.

Aleks
It’s not.

Aleks
It’s not live for anyone who’s heard me play it.

Aleks
I’m sorry to say, but my humps into Baby Got Back.

Aleks
So mix a lot.

John
Yeah.

John
Right.

Eddy
I have to share it.

John
Anaconda as well.

Eddy
Yeah.

Eddy
It doesn’t want none.

Aleks
Yes, yes.

Aleks
Yeah, I don’t play that.

Aleks
I don’t play Anaconda.

Aleks
See, again, this is great to have.

Eddy
These chats, you know.

Eddy
Yeah.

John
Broaden your mind.

Aleks
Broaden your mind.

Aleks
Boom, boom, pow.

Aleks
Oh, I’m gonna give this quite a high.

Eddy
Did you write these notes?

Eddy
Boo.

Eddy
Boom, pow is very unusual.

Aleks
Do you know why?

Aleks
Because the lyrics describe the effects of the beat.

Aleks
Boom, boom, pow.

Aleks
That’s why.

John
Yeah, there’s a word for that.

John
I can’t think of what it is.

Aleks
Some sort of meta.

Aleks
You love when things are meta, don’t you?

Eddy
I do love when things are meta.

Eddy
Meta Quest doesn’t really have verses or choruses.

Eddy
Instead, it’s the black eyed peers of their own beat.

Eddy
Yeah, it is meta.

Eddy
It’s a meta.

John
So the word that I was thinking of is honour.

John
Matt.

John
Appear.

John
Which it refers to a word that phonetically imitates or resembles or suggests the sound it describes.

John
For example, words like buzz, sizzle and bang.

John
Boom, boom, pow, by definition, is an onomatopoeia or a series of onomatopoeias.

Eddy
I would love you to somehow, both of you to slide that word into a ceremony at some point.

John
Yeah, Leave it with me.

Aleks
Onomatopoeia.

Aleks
Okay, done.

Aleks
Challenge acceptance.

Aleks
All right, all right.

Aleks
And you have to slot it into your MC script tomorrow.

Eddy
Okay.

John
Challenge words.

John
I like it.

Aleks
Just do it at the end of the night when everyone’s pissed.

Aleks
Yeah, just say, how did you guys like that onomatopoeia earlier?

Aleks
Anyway, it’s the final song of the night.

Eddy
I could be playing Boom, boom Pow.

Eddy
And I’ll just get on the mic.

Aleks
You’d be like, how’s this?

Aleks
We could all do that.

Aleks
How’s this?

Aleks
Onomatopoeia.

John
Yeah.

John
As useful, there’ll be one person at the wedding.

Eddy
We think you’re the best.

Eddy
Everyone else would be confused.

Aleks
You only need one.

Eddy
You only need one.

Aleks
Just one.

Aleks
You can make your night.

Eddy
So what else do we need to say about Boom Boom Power before we move?

Aleks
I think it’s so good.

Aleks
I don’t know, but everyone watch this SNL skit.

Aleks
Honestly, it’s great.

John
Yeah, I’ll have a watch as soon as I’m done here.

Aleks
Beautiful.

Aleks
Well, I am going to go first with my score and I’m going to give this a 7.0.5.

Eddy
Oh, that’s the highest?

John
Yeah, the first Fractional.

Aleks
Fractional.

Aleks
Sorry, I forgot to say we.

Aleks
We accept numbers that aren’t whole numbers.

John
Okay.

John
Right, I’m.

John
I’m gonna go.

John
I’m gonna stick with the seven.

Eddy
I think seven’s appropriate.

John
Yeah.

Aleks
Oh, I’m sorry.

Aleks
I was Inappropriate with my 0.5.

John
0.5 was completely justified.

John
And we’re here for it.

Aleks
Beautiful.

Aleks
That’s definitely been my favourite so far.

Eddy
Yeah, we’re.

Eddy
We’re really, really starting again.

Aleks
Yes.

Aleks
Whose turn is it?

Eddy
I think it’s John’s.

Aleks
John.

John
No, I just did that one.

John
So we’re on to you, Alex Mac.

Aleks
Alex Mac.

Aleks
All right, Number three Love Story.

Aleks
Taylor Swift.

Eddy
Huge.

Aleks
Which apparently she wrote on her bedroom floor in 20 minutes.

Eddy
Really?

Aleks
All right, stop showing off.

Aleks
Tay Tay.

John
Yeah.

Aleks
Wow.

Aleks
Okay.

Aleks
Have I played this at a wedding?

Aleks
Yes.

Aleks
John, what are your thoughts?

John
Oh, I love it.

John
I’m a big.

John
I’m a big Swiftie myself.

John
I have seen Tay Tay in concert before.

John
I played this early days when it came out back in.

John
I remember playing this towards the end of the night.

John
Then they always got a bit of a reaction and then there was at least a 10 year gap where I didn’t play it at all.

John
And then as she’s risen in popularity, as she’s totally walked away from the country, or shouldn’t say totally, but as she’s moved away from that country realm to the mainstream and she’s absolutely skyrocketing in popularity, all of a sudden, Love Story and a few others have as well.

John
And it’s been huge in a number of weddings I’ve had.

Aleks
Yeah, same.

Aleks
Yeah.

Eddy
Question for both of you.

Aleks
I know what you’re gonna ask.

Eddy
What am I going to ask?

Aleks
Do we play the remix?

Eddy
No.

Eddy
Do you play the Taylor’s version of the track.

Aleks
Yes, of course.

Eddy
Because I had a client specifically, specifically say I want all the versions to be Taylor’s version.

Eddy
So I had to go and re buy all of the songs just so my conscience was okay during the gig.

John
I suppose it comes back to that conversation about TikTok before and making sure as much as Kesha doesn’t need my $2.19 on.

John
On iTunes.

John
You know, there’s been issues with production in the past with her, which, you know, we don’t necessarily need to get into now, but now that she’s released the newer version, she owns the rights to that song.

Eddy
Yeah.

John
The money goes.

John
Majority of the money, or far more than it would have before goes to her.

Aleks
Yeah.

John
Same thing applies with.

John
With Taylor Swift.

John
Now, you know, Taylor doesn’t need any of our money, that’s for sure.

John
But same rules apply, you know, if that was any of our product that we were selling, we would want, you know, we would want the money.

John
We’d be disappointed if we didn’t get the money for that.

John
Of the majority.

John
Of what?

John
Majority of what?

John
What we should be getting.

John
Yeah.

John
And you know, I.

John
I have at times, if I’ve had a Taylor Swift song requested that I would play or have played if I haven’t had the Taylor’s version handy, I’ve.

John
I’ve been known to buy it on the spot.

Aleks
Yep.

Eddy
Good, good.

Aleks
Strong, strong.

Aleks
Principled man you are, John.

Eddy
How about you, Alex?

Eddy
Are you Taylor’s version?

Aleks
Yes, Taylor’s.

Aleks
I.

Aleks
When you buy stuff on itunes, I can download as well.

Aleks
So I.

Aleks
Now there is a remix.

Aleks
Can’t remember by whom.

Aleks
I don’t play it that often.

Aleks
Remix sometimes.

Eddy
Dangerous territory it is.

Aleks
Sometimes it works.

Aleks
Sometimes it works.

Aleks
My preference is the original.

Aleks
And this is a song that is either.

Aleks
Is usually requested as a final song, but otherwise goes really well in like the last, you know, 20 minutes, half hour.

Aleks
Okay, what was your question?

Aleks
Taylor’s version.

Aleks
Yes.

Eddy
Yes.

John
Where possible.

Eddy
Yeah, where possible.

Eddy
Yes, definitely.

Aleks
Yeah.

Aleks
I mean, what more can we say?

Aleks
This song gets such a strong reaction.

Aleks
And you know what?

Aleks
It gets such a strong reaction from the oldies too.

Eddy
Yes.

Aleks
Which is awesome.

Eddy
Yeah.

Eddy
Which is always a struggle.

Eddy
I mean, the perfect song that you can play as a wedding dj, in my opinion, is a song that’s going to resonate with everyone.

Eddy
Rarely does that happen, but I think that something like this gets really, really close.

Aleks
Yeah.

Eddy
For the right crowd.

Aleks
I agree.

Aleks
Is that your experience, John, too?

Aleks
The oldies get behind this one.

John
100.

John
Yeah.

John
Anytime I’ve played It.

John
It’s been well received.

John
Yeah.

John
There’s times when I go, well, no, tonight.

John
Tonight’s not the night, and that’s fine.

John
But whenever it’s come out, it’s.

John
It’s.

John
Yeah.

John
Met with.

Eddy
Yeah.

Eddy
The right response from the oldies and from the gentlemen, from the ladies, from everybody.

Aleks
People of all genders and identities.

Aleks
Okay, so what do we give it out of 10 for?

Aleks
Wedding playability.

Eddy
Wedding playability.

Eddy
It’s for me.

Eddy
It’s a nine.

Eddy
It’s a nine.

Aleks
Yeah.

John
Are you ready?

John
Am I gonna.

John
Are you ready for this?

John
This is your first 10.

Eddy
No, I’ll have to put something in post production.

Eddy
Well, I will.

Eddy
There will be something exciting happening right now.

Eddy
We just have to start with that.

John
Let’s get it on the fly.

John
Start with this is your first 10, and then go any intro music and we go from there.

John
Job done.

Eddy
I like it.

Eddy
I like it a lot.

Aleks
I am just writing a message to someone who tried to quote a client who tried to call me, saying, just recording a podcast.

Aleks
Sorry for that.

Aleks
Yes.

Aleks
Okay.

Aleks
10.

Aleks
Interesting.

Aleks
I’m going to give it an 8.5.

Eddy
What a party pooper you are.

John
That’s okay.

John
You.

John
You’ve used your.

John
You’ve split your one.

John
You’ve got halves across your.

Eddy
Boom, boom, power 7.5.

Eddy
So that point five could have been in Taylor’s court.

John
You’ve carried the point five over to Taytay.

John
Who would have thought your first.

John
Your first 10 would have been a country song?

Eddy
That is true.

Aleks
I mean, I don’t.

Aleks
I don’t think of it as a country song, but.

Aleks
Yeah, you’re right.

Eddy
Yeah.

Eddy
Yeah.

Aleks
What are you giving Ed?

Aleks
The suspense?

Eddy
I gave it a nine.

Aleks
Oh, did you?

Eddy
Yeah.

Eddy
I completely started this.

Eddy
It’s nice you’re listening.

Aleks
No, sorry.

John
It was texting a client.

Aleks
Yeah.

John
It’s good.

Eddy
Our priorities.

Eddy
It’s all about the clients, which is true.

Eddy
Yeah.

Eddy
All right, so it’s actually cool that we’ve done it this way because, John, you will end up with number one.

Eddy
This is perfect.

Eddy
Okay.

Aleks
Was purely a fluke.

Eddy
No.

John
I’ve been watching.

John
I hope either of you double up, because I won that number one.

Aleks
Yeah.

Aleks
We don’t even.

Eddy
There would never be a time that we wouldn’t give you the number one.

Eddy
Okay.

Eddy
So number.

Eddy
So we’re happy to move on to nothing else to be said.

Aleks
No.

Eddy
No.

Eddy
Okay.

Eddy
Beautiful.

Eddy
Oh, I will say that you have to play this song late at night.

Aleks
Yeah.

Eddy
Taylor’s song.

Eddy
Yeah.

John
100.

Aleks
Yeah.

John
If you played that, you know, straight after the first Dance.

John
You’d have people looking at you like.

Eddy
Yeah, I’m not drunk enough.

John
Done something to the.

John
A close family member or a kitten or something.

Aleks
I have had moments, I think I’ve told you, you know when you’re, like, having, like, a banging dance floor and it gets really going, like the first half hour, and then you get to a point and you’re like, oh, have I peaked?

Eddy
Have I peaked?

Aleks
I’ve had those moments.

Aleks
I gotta bring it back down.

Aleks
And then I’m gonna get back up again because I’m like.

Aleks
Because I’m, like, really getting into it.

Aleks
And then it’s like, I’m playing, like, losing at Fisher, and I’m like, it’s 9:00.

Eddy
Yeah, I’ve got two more hours.

John
Is it fair to say, though?

John
And you two may have a view on whether you’ve experienced this, but there’s some nights you have where the crowd is that pumping that you could just play anything.

John
You could play anything.

John
And they just ended up.

Aleks
Yeah.

Eddy
Yeah.

Eddy
They’re the magic that reminds you why we do this.

John
The unicorn.

John
Yeah.

Aleks
Yes.

Aleks
It’s so true.

Aleks
And you just like, I can’t put a foot wrong.

Eddy
And then you have this sense of dread after the wedding.

Eddy
You’re like, oh, no, I’m gonna have three in a row.

Eddy
That just.

Aleks
Yeah, then you can’t.

Aleks
You can’t just bask in the glory.

Aleks
You have to be like.

Eddy
Because you’re only as good as your last gig.

Eddy
That’s my whole philosophy.

John
Yeah.

John
I’m coming off the back of a few good ones, too.

John
So I don’t know whether I’ve just got my mojo back or I’ve been lucky, but I’ve had some rippers lately and I really felt like that where I could just play anything and people would be into it.

Aleks
Just trust your dj.

Aleks
It’s not the couples, it’s the guests.

Eddy
It could be a product of the fact that we’re moving into summer now and.

Eddy
And we’re almost at the end of the year.

Eddy
People are happier.

John
All that kind of stuff shaken all that Covid shit from a few years ago.

John
We’re back.

John
Party wise, we’re back.

Eddy
Yeah, exactly.

Aleks
Yeah.

Aleks
And I don’t know if you Just deviating from music for a moment.

Aleks
I don’t know if you feel this way too, John, with your ceremonies.

Aleks
Like, I’ve had some again, just depending on the crowd, where they’ve just laughed at everything I’ve said, even if it’s not been funny.

Aleks
And then I’ve had others where it’s just like nothing really lands that well.

John
You and I have had this discussion before, Alex, but you do it.

John
Like for me, an indoor ceremony will always land better than outdoor ceremony.

John
And I.

John
It must be acoustic related.

John
There’s something about indoor ceremony from.

John
From our perspective I feel is better.

John
But from a guest perspective and outdoor one would be better.

John
I don’t know whether I just said the right thing.

John
I prefer an indoor just for clarification’s sake.

John
But.

John
But all my ceremonies, like, they’ve been outdoors and they have been some of my best.

John
So something’s going on.

John
I’m delivering ceremonies better than ever and I’m DJing better than ever or getting better.

John
The best reactions.

John
And it’s pretty cool.

John
Something’s going on.

Eddy
If you’re listening and you’re interested in having John your celebrant and or DJ both.

Eddy
What have you get in now because he’s surely going to raise his prices very soon.

John
Just on the back of being on.

Aleks
This podcast, he’s already, he’s already talking himself up.

Eddy
He’s like, he’s looking at his computer screen right now.

Eddy
So maybe it’s happening.

Aleks
Ten inquiries shoot through.

Aleks
They just know that he’s on here.

Aleks
All right, Wonderful.

Aleks
What we’re talking about ceremonies.

Aleks
Yes, it’s true.

Aleks
And look, sometimes it.

Aleks
And we say this to couples as well.

Aleks
There is an element of.

Aleks
They absolutely have to bring that energy, but we also can’t control how or what the vibe is of the other 100.

Aleks
120 people there.

Aleks
Sometimes.

Aleks
Yeah, they’re not drinking much.

Aleks
They’re not dancing much.

Aleks
The vibe is slightly, slightly off or something.

Aleks
So we can only do what we can do.

Eddy
That’s right.

Aleks
Unless you’re amazing like John and then all of his.

Eddy
It’s too expensive for everyone now.

Aleks
All right, moving on.

Eddy
Let’s move on.

Eddy
Okay, so number two.

Eddy
So I think this is probably one of my.

Eddy
Probably the.

Eddy
We’ll see when I give it the.

Eddy
The review or the rating.

Eddy
But Sexy by David Guetta featuring Akon.

Eddy
I love this tune.

Eddy
I’m just gonna lay that down straight away.

John
It’s.

Eddy
It’s an absolute banger.

Aleks
Yep.

Aleks
Agree.

John
Do you ever think when you hear a song for the first time, you don’t always love it, but then sometimes you hear a song and go, this is going to stand the test of time.

John
I remember when this came out, thinking, this is something that I’m going to be hearing on the 15th of November 2024.

Eddy
Yep, yep, yeah, yep.

Aleks
Yeah.

Eddy
It’s so Good.

Eddy
That.

Eddy
That bass line, the kick drum, everything.

Eddy
The production of this song.

Eddy
Like, hats off to David Gordon.

Eddy
He knows what he’s doing.

Eddy
Yeah, I don’t know if he.

Eddy
Does he do his own production still?

Eddy
Is he into.

Eddy
Into the ghost producer retirement zone?

John
Who cares?

John
He’s.

John
He’s on his private island somewhere just drinking.

John
What was.

John
What are they doing?

John
Chris Island.

Aleks
It’s funny when you’re probably more fancy than Belvedere.

Eddy
We’ve been lucky enough to be Jacob’s Creek.

Eddy
That’s when you know.

Aleks
Yellow.

Aleks
Yellow Glenn.

Eddy
Oh, dear.

Eddy
What’s the other one?

John
Gossips.

Eddy
Yeah.

Eddy
Oh, dear.

Eddy
Passion Pop.

Eddy
That’s what I was thinking of.

Eddy
Yes.

Aleks
All right.

Aleks
That’s the lowest.

Aleks
No, Fruity Gordo.

Aleks
We know.

Aleks
Goon.

Eddy
Fruity Lexia.

John
Fortune on his private island off the cash.

Aleks
Maybe he’s sick of the billionaire lifestyle.

Aleks
I don’t know if he’s a billionaire.

Eddy
So what, he’s playing Google?

Aleks
Yeah.

Aleks
He’s like, I want to take it back to basics.

Eddy
I want to import say Hills Hoist from Australia.

Aleks
Maybe plays.

Aleks
Plays it on his private plane.

John
Anyway, Nana’s on that hills Holly.

Eddy
Oh, dear.

Eddy
No.

Eddy
Big fan.

Aleks
Yes.

Aleks
And.

Aleks
And of course, the name of the song and the lyrics were changed to Sexy Chickens.

John
Yeah.

Eddy
Yeah.

Eddy
Do you see?

Eddy
I don’t think I have the sexy chick version, but there have been occasions where I’ve gone to play this song and thought, based on the crowd, should I play sick?

Eddy
Should I try and find it on Tidal or stream it?

Eddy
The sexy chick version?

Eddy
Because I only got the sexy bitch bitch version.

Aleks
Rude.

Aleks
We’ve already sworn, so you have to put the explicit warning on the Apple podcast.

Aleks
Good.

John
Do you really?

Aleks
Yeah.

Aleks
Yes.

Eddy
Yeah.

Eddy
It’s the only one that asks you.

Eddy
Apple.

John
Really?

John
Okay.

John
I’ve got to put money in the square jar from before anyway, so just.

John
I’ll chip in.

John
Five bucks.

Aleks
I was gonna take World.

Aleks
I was gonna say.

Aleks
Like I was gonna ask at the beginning.

Aleks
Are we gonna swear?

Aleks
Because I thought maybe, John, you might want to listen to the podcast with your kids in the car, but you probably swear in front of them anyway, so we’re all good.

John
I’m pretty sure you both been on the phone with me when either you’ve sworn or I’ve sworn with kids in the car and they understand the context of it.

Aleks
Oh, good.

Aleks
Wonderful.

Aleks
Sexy beach.

Aleks
You like this song, John Ripper?

Aleks
Yeah.

John
Fantastic.

John
And I’ve probably played it a handful of times in the last.

John
Last few gigs as well, and I’ve never had a time when it hasn’t been well received as well.

John
Yeah, it’s.

John
And, you know, if you play the club mix and you’re bringing that in underneath something else.

John
That beat from the beginning.

John
Yeah, everyone knows it.

John
It’s that teaser.

John
And yeah, it’s brilliant.

John
And there’s nothing else quite like it.

Eddy
No.

Aleks
What about Memories?

Eddy
Memories is.

Eddy
Yeah, it’s similar, but Memories is a good one too.

Aleks
Yeah.

Eddy
It’s a good time for electronic dance music.

Eddy
Wasn’t it?

Aleks
Very good.

John
Just you.

John
We too.

John
Wait until they get into the honourable mentions.

Eddy
Yes.

Eddy
I’m very excited about that.

Eddy
So anything else to be said about sexy bitch slash chick?

Aleks
I should play it more.

Eddy
Okay.

Aleks
Yeah, yeah.

Aleks
Beginning to have some regrets.

John
Well, you feel like I’m trying to work the writing out in my head and I feel like if it was something I played more regularly, it would be approaching that 10.

John
But because I don’t play it enough and I don’t get that immediate reaction every single wedding or event, it’s not quite ready for that.

John
But maybe in the next year, if we all commit to playing that more, it could get up there.

Aleks
Yeah.

Aleks
I want to give it an 8 based on the fact that I also don’t play it that much, even though I should.

John
I’m gonna go with a 0.5.

John
I’m going eight and a half.

Eddy
Oh, yes.

Eddy
That’s a.

Eddy
That’s a high distinction, isn’t it?

Aleks
By the way, the decimal points are only 0.5 increments.

Eddy
Okay.

Aleks
Okay.

Aleks
You can’t give it as 8 point or whatever.

Aleks
7.

Aleks
Because I can see in your eyes.

Eddy
I.

Eddy
Yeah, I am gonna get.

Eddy
I’m gonna give this a nine.

Eddy
I’ve given two nines.

Eddy
Y.

Eddy
I just love this song.

Eddy
I think it’s incredible.

Eddy
For weddings, I would.

Eddy
I would give it a 10, but I don’t play it as much as I should, so I’m going to give it a solid nine.

Eddy
I don’t think I’ve ever played it to a.

Eddy
To a soft dance floor.

Eddy
It just goes.

Eddy
It goes hard.

Eddy
Yeah.

Aleks
Cool.

Aleks
All right.

Aleks
So that was.

Aleks
I think that was.

Aleks
Well, hang on.

Aleks
What.

Aleks
What do we have?

Aleks
So what, 8, 8.5, 9.

Aleks
17.

Aleks
What’s 17 plus 8.5?

Aleks
25.5.

Aleks
Okay.

Aleks
So, yeah, no, Tay Tay’s on top.

Aleks
19.

Eddy
Yeah.

Eddy
I think for that song, deservedly so.

Eddy
Just because we know the reaction it gets at winning.

Eddy
Like it’s just played at the right time.

Eddy
Obviously, it’s.

Eddy
It’s ginormous.

John
Yeah.

Aleks
Yeah, Ginormous.

Aleks
All right.

Aleks
John gets to do the honours first.

Eddy
Here we go.

Eddy
Drum roll.

John
Your podcast editor put a drum.

John
Rather than top of.

John
On top of everything, John.

Aleks
I’ve heard that.

Eddy
We did do a drum.

Eddy
I don’t know if you heard that, but it was in there.

John
Okay.

John
Yeah, good.

John
Just.

John
I was just getting something from the fridge.

John
It’s the third of our Black Eyed Peas songs.

John
It’s.

John
I Got a Feeling.

Eddy
Oh.

Eddy
Just letting it settle in.

Aleks
My famous.

Aleks
My famous.

Eddy
All right, well, let’s.

Eddy
Let’s see what Alex thinks about this one first.

John
Yeah.

Aleks
Oh, I don’t play this song.

John
Really?

Aleks
Really.

Eddy
Oh.

Aleks
I play it when it’s requested on the night, and I play it when my couples request it ahead of time, but that isn’t that often.

Eddy
Yep.

Aleks
I don’t know if that’s just a, you know, whatever.

Aleks
I don’t love it.

Aleks
It’s irritating.

John
It does fall more on the cliche side.

John
And often as wedding DJs, we talk about that, I suppose, for lack of a better phrase.

John
And I say we talk about it, but there’s no title for it.

John
That cliche.

John
It’s almost like a valley.

John
You know, you’ve got a.

John
Let’s say you’ve got 100 people at a wedding.

John
Your music taste is, you know, somewhere.

John
If I’m.

John
It’s not a visual podcast, but if you can see my hands.

John
Your crowd’s this big.

John
Your music taste within the room is this big.

Eddy
Yeah.

John
And something like I Got A Feeling by the Black Eyed Peas falls within this small range of things that is inoffensive and people like.

John
And, you know, you’re going to get a reasonable reaction no matter what it’s played.

Eddy
Yeah.

Aleks
Do you play this much, Ed?

Eddy
I didn’t play this for a solid couple of years at one point because I think it just kind of fell away.

Eddy
But recently I have been playing this not for all couples.

Eddy
Couples that probably would think this song is a bit cheesy, obviously I won’t play it for them.

Eddy
But for couples that like a more of a mainstreamy pop kind of brief, I will play this song.

Eddy
And it gets a great reaction.

Eddy
The parents and the oldies love they song as well.

Aleks
Do love this song.

Aleks
That’s true.

Aleks
You’re right.

John
And for you, for your 50 plus or 60 pluses in the room, to them, that’s a new song.

John
That’s a.

John
That’s a top 40 right.

John
Right there for them.

John
And that’s something that, you know, they won’t necessarily be into some of the newer stuff that we may be playing, but to them, that is new.

John
Yeah, just being 15 years old and it’s something that, you know, can.

John
Can span generations.

Eddy
And you can play moat.

Eddy
Like, you can play a fair chunk of it, too.

Eddy
Yeah, it’s a song that you don’t necessarily need to come in and out of.

Eddy
Like, do a chorus and a verse and then get out.

Eddy
You can play a sizable chunk of it and people are still there for it.

Aleks
I.

Aleks
I have had this, and it works really well for an entrance song when you’ve got a reasonable.

Aleks
You know, you’ve got more than one entrance, like, not just the couple coming in.

Eddy
The production’s awesome on it, too.

Eddy
Have you been able to give this song a spin with your new speakers you recently purchased?

John
No, I haven’t.

John
I actually haven’t played this for a little while, but I will when I get the chance.

John
I actually haven’t played Use those.

John
The new PA in a room that isn’t a big concrete shell yet.

John
So, yeah, when I get the chance, I’ll.

John
I’ll give it a run and I’ll let you know how that goes.

John
But if you listen to that album on vinyl, the End by the Black Eyed Peas, the production quality on the whole thing is phenomenal.

John
And dare say if you.

John
If you’d apply it on vinyl through a reasonable PA or anything that’s of decent quality, you’re going to get some awesome sound out of that.

John
There’s parts of.

John
Parts of some of these tracks by the Black Eyed Peas I didn’t actually know existed within the.

John
The production until I listened to it on vinyl.

Eddy
Wow.

Eddy
There you go.

Aleks
Everyone do it.

Eddy
Jump in the car.

Eddy
Go to your local record shop.

John
You’re in car turntable.

Eddy
It has to do some major anti.

Eddy
Skip on that.

Aleks
All right, I’m going to give it a seven.

Eddy
Okay.

Aleks
I know it’s a bit harsh.

Aleks
I’m gonna go a bit cheesy.

John
Yeah, I would agree with the cheese element of it, but, yeah, I’m gonna use my other 0.5 and go 7.5 on this.

Eddy
Okay.

Eddy
I think I’m gonna.

Eddy
I think I share your sentiment, John.

Eddy
I think a 7.5 is kind of spot on for this track.

Aleks
All right, that’s the top 10.

John
What do we do now?

Eddy
So what we do now?

Eddy
So we’re going to look at some honourable mentions that you sort of mentioned before.

Eddy
So obviously you’ve had a look at the rest of the 100.

Eddy
Let’s hear about the ones that pop out for you.

John
Okay, let’s start with.

John
Do you want to take turns?

John
I’ll do one and then each of you do one.

John
Let’s start with Get Shaky by the Ian Carey Project.

Eddy
Oh, what number was that?

Aleks
Stop.

John
Oh, I’ve just taken a handful of notes.

John
100.

John
So I actually don’t have numbers per se, but, you know, if we’re talking that electronic EDM slash house sort of period of time, Get Shaky was massive.

Aleks
Amazing.

John
Massive, massive, huge.

Aleks
Gets a great reaction.

Eddy
It really does.

Aleks
I love dancing music.

Eddy
Brief also sort of saying what you mentioned before, John, like with Sexy Bitch, people know the song when it’s coming into.

Eddy
So you’re mixing that floor to the four to the floor.

Eddy
Trouble saying that four to the floor stuff.

Eddy
People will get that.

Eddy
That strumming of their guitar or what have you.

Eddy
At the beginning of that tracking, you see people point at you, go, yes, this is.

Eddy
I know exactly what’s coming up.

Aleks
Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Aleks
Oh, God.

Aleks
There’s some good tunes in this top 100.

Aleks
I’m gonna go next and I’m gonna pick out Bonkers.

John
Oh, yeah.

Aleks
Rascal and Armin Van Helden.

John
Same rules apply.

Aleks
Yep.

John
Yeah, same rules of life.

John
Sexy Get Shaky you spoke about.

John
Oh, I’ve just lost it.

John
Yes.

John
Memories before.

John
The same kind of.

John
Same kind of thing.

John
They’ve got these iconic instrumental components to it.

Aleks
Good time for commercial dance.

Eddy
And something very similar to all these tracks.

Eddy
And I usually mix it in with Memories is Day and Night.

Eddy
The Crookers remix.

Eddy
Kid Cudi.

John
Yeah, yeah.

Aleks
What a time.

Eddy
I love that this podcast movie is just 3D just going dance music.

John
Yes.

John
I just got asked what I want for dinner and I said pizza.

Eddy
Oh.

Eddy
Oh, I want pizza too.

John
Well, can we do next series be about different food?

Eddy
Why don’t we critique all of the food we’ve had at venues?

John
Or I can see how that would be a shit idea.

Eddy
We can’t name the venues though, obviously it’ll be anonymous.

John
Just make rhymes for them.

Aleks
Yeah, yeah, exactly.

Eddy
I’ll throw sort of more of a wild card out there.

Eddy
Little Line Man.

Eddy
Mumford and Sons, which topped the Triple.

John
J Hottest 100 for that year.

Eddy
There you go.

Eddy
Which we will actually, after we do this, we will quickly go over to the Billboard US and the Triple J and just list the 10 to ones on those just for, you know, a little bit of a change.

Aleks
Right down.

Eddy
Yeah, I love that number 100 was the lonely Islands.

Eddy
Jizz In My Pants just made it.

John
What a cute.

John
What a tune.

John
If you haven’t seen the video clip to that.

John
Facial movements in that are so descriptive.

Eddy
Yeah.

John
Even if it was like the nicest song in history.

John
Like about.

John
I know, like looking after your grandma and taking a puppy for a walk.

John
And then someone.

John
Someone in the video clip made their face that either Justin Timberlake or Andy Samberg makes.

John
Just blowing massive loads.

John
It’s very, very descriptive.

Aleks
I did play I just had sex.

Eddy
Oh, yeah.

Aleks
At a wedding recently.

Aleks
And it went off really funny.

John
That reminds me of the other week at a wedding.

John
Someone came up to me and had up their phone and said, I’ve been a nasty girl.

John
And I’ve said.

John
I said, have you?

John
And then she walked away and I saw her say to her friends, which he asked for.

John
And then I said, have you?

John
And they all laughed.

John
So if you hold.

John
If someone held it up their phone said, I just had sex.

John
Yeah.

John
Yeah.

John
Well done.

Aleks
You’re having a good time at this wedding.

John
I’m struggling to make a decision on what I go with next.

John
I’m gonna go with anyway by Duck Source.

Eddy
Oh, yes.

Aleks
Yeah.

Eddy
So duck sauce.

Eddy
Who are Alex.

John
Well.

Eddy
Or John.

Eddy
Whoever goes first.

Aleks
Peking duck.

Aleks
And no, not being armoured.

Aleks
Van Helden and a track.

Eddy
Yay.

Aleks
Sorry.

John
What a combo was.

Eddy
Yes.

Eddy
What a combo.

Eddy
So we’ve been watching some Armin van Helden YouTube clips of just concert of concerts or things.

Aleks
Okay.

Eddy
Old man concerts of things.

Eddy
My mom always says shows.

Eddy
How was your show on the weekend?

Eddy
Is a wedding mob.

Eddy
But yeah.

Eddy
He’s what, 54 or 56 and he looks like he’s 32.

Aleks
That’s what happens when you marry a 24 year old.

Eddy
Yeah.

Eddy
Alex went down the.

Eddy
The rabbit hole of who he’s.

Eddy
Who he’s marrying.

Aleks
I think I’m following her now.

Aleks
All right.

Aleks
I want to throw another one in there.

Aleks
Evacuate the dance floor.

Aleks
Cascade.

John
Yes.

Eddy
Nice.

Eddy
Yep.

Eddy
I don’t really play that that much.

Eddy
I should.

John
Yeah.

John
When I saw this in the.

John
When I saw that in the list before I go.

John
I’ve got to play that more.

Aleks
No, you know what?

Aleks
Sorry.

Aleks
Yeah, it’s a good one.

Aleks
But I play every time you touch.

Eddy
Yeah, that’s the one.

Eddy
That’s the one to play.

Aleks
She’s not here, Edward.

Eddy
All right, so I did.

Eddy
Oh, Hotel Room Service by Pitbull goes.

John
Is that.

John
Oh, nine.

Eddy
Yes.

Eddy
Yep.

John
I’ve got so many here.

John
Oh, what do I go with next?

John
I’m gonna go with Untouched by the Veronica.

Eddy
Oh, the.

Aleks
Hello.

Eddy
You know, the unofficial Australian national anthem.

Aleks
How did that not.

Aleks
I feel like that’s in the top 10 this year.

John
It was in the Billboard top 100, so it could have been an 08 that seeped through to the charts the following year.

John
I feel that this may be the case with some of them, but given they chartered within that year, I believe they count.

John
You make the rules, though.

John
You too.

Aleks
There are no rules.

Eddy
The rule is there are no rules.

Aleks
I’m gonna throw.

Aleks
I’m gonna throw a curveball in because I never play this.

Aleks
And just to remind myself, Down.

Aleks
Jay Sean featuring Lil Wayne.

John
Oh.

Eddy
Oh, wow.

Aleks
Yeah, I reckon for the right crowd.

Eddy
Yeah.

Aleks
Pop off.

Eddy
Yep.

Eddy
This is the thing.

Eddy
This is something I.

Eddy
I explained to couples is there’s so much good music and you have such a limited time at a wedding to play it all.

Eddy
And that’s always the tragedy of being a wedding dj or any DJ in that.

Aleks
Especially when you get those crowds that are, like, loving every song.

Aleks
You’re like, I could literally play for another three hours.

John
If anyone wants a purely 2009 chartered wedding, just give me a call, Send me a fax.

Aleks
Hey, maybe after couples have listened to a heap of these episodes, we are going to get those requests.

Eddy
That’d be very cool.

Aleks
Yeah.

John
Or we.

John
We set up a 2009 theme night at a.

John
At a club.

Eddy
That’d be fun.

Eddy
I’ve always wanted to do that because you can really get into the.

Eddy
Into the weeds with.

Eddy
With this stuff too, you know now.

Aleks
Oh, I’m not gonna have it.

Eddy
We’ll do one more.

Eddy
So what else jumps out at you?

Aleks
I know, but there’s two.

Aleks
But I’m just gonna mention.

Aleks
Would I.

Aleks
But we want to choose stuff that’s wedding play.

Aleks
Wedding play.

Eddy
I think we’ve just been choosing things we like.

Aleks
All right, I’m gonna choose bulletproof.

Aleks
LaRue.

Eddy
Oh, you’ve got a story about Larry.

Aleks
Yeah, I was.

Aleks
When I was living in London, I was very drunk and had been day drinking all day and bumped into her at a bar in the afternoon and was, like, trying to, like, chat to her and see where she was going afterwards.

Aleks
And she was going to a house party, and she did not want a bar of me.

Aleks
But I still love this song.

Eddy
So I guess she was bulletproof.

Eddy
And you were the bullet.

Aleks
I was the drunken.

John
Another reference to tick tock as well.

Aleks
To what?

John
In the lyrics to bulletproof, she Tick tick, tick tock.

John
So, you know, just another throwback to.

John
It was all happening in that.

Aleks
What about you?

Aleks
What song are you gonna.

Eddy
No, I’m spent.

Eddy
I’m all spent.

Eddy
But look, there’s so many great tunes in there.

Eddy
And we do recommend who, if you’ve gotten this far to listening to Us three rabbit on to have a look for yourself.

Eddy
Have a look because it could give you some inspiration for your wedding.

Eddy
If you are having wedding.

Eddy
Thinking about tunes.

Eddy
Yeah, jump on.

Eddy
It’s a.

Eddy
It’s actually a really good way to.

Eddy
To get some inspo.

Aleks
Definitely.

Aleks
And we always put a link to the top hundred in the blog post for the episode as well.

Aleks
Let’s quickly run through.

Eddy
So we’re gonna have a look at what the Billboard charts look like for 10 to 1.

Eddy
So I’m just gonna rattle these off and stop me if you do want to discuss them.

Eddy
So number 10 was.

Eddy
Gives you hell by the All American Rejects.

Eddy
Nothing to say about that one.

Eddy
Heartless by Kanye west was number nine.

Eddy
Number eight, Single Ladies by Beyonce.

John
That was high.

John
Yeah, that was high.

John
I’ve avoided that in recent times.

John
Yeah, it got a bit done to death with the.

John
The bouquet toss, but I feel that we’re out of that now and we can.

John
It’s safe again.

Eddy
Coming back.

Eddy
It’s safe again.

Eddy
Yeah.

Eddy
Because that often does happen with a lot of tracks.

Eddy
They get destroyed by overplaying and then, yeah, they kind of creep back in.

Aleks
Holy.

Eddy
I’m yours, Jason Mraz.

Eddy
One song that I.

Eddy
I really don’t.

John
Like personally, but I suppose wedding playability, particularly ceremonies.

John
Yeah, it’s high.

John
It is high.

Eddy
It is.

John
Yeah.

Eddy
Here we go right round.

Eddy
Flowrider came in at number six.

Eddy
Love Story by Taylor Swift, number five, which is crazy because Americans, huge on country.

Eddy
Yeah.

Eddy
Anyway, I Got a feeling was number four.

Eddy
Number three was Just Dance by Lady Gaga.

Eddy
Number two was Poker Face by Lady Gaga.

Eddy
And number one, Boom Boom Pow by the Black Eyed Peas.

Aleks
Nice.

John
See, a lot of that, Lady Gaga was 08.

John
It all came out.

John
Now, I could be a bit of a hangover on the charts, but.

John
But, you know, even if you look at Lady Gaga in particular, she had Bad Romance come out in 09.

Aleks
Yeah.

John
Other tunes.

Aleks
Yeah.

Aleks
Yeah.

Aleks
That is a great tune.

Eddy
John, do you have the triple J 10 to 1.

John
I do.

John
Do you want to take turns or do you want me to wrap it?

Eddy
No, you can.

Eddy
You can go for it.

John
So number 10 for the Triple J Hottest 100 was Dog Days Are Over by Florence and the Machine.

John
Something that I’ve been asked for a little bit at ceremonies recently.

John
Uprising by Muse at number nine.

John
Probably for me, the only miss there in the Triple J top ten.

John
Not Fair by Lily Allen.

John
I’m playing that Coin Laundry by Lisa Mitchell.

Eddy
I love that song.

Eddy
Spot for that one.

John
Bulletproof by LaRue.

John
One of Alex’s from before.

John
Broken Leg by Blue Juice.

John
Haven’t played that for a few years, but tune Lister Mania by Phoenix.

Aleks
Yeah.

Aleks
For the indie.

John
Love it, everyone.

John
That’s something that would be stuck in everyone’s head, but they don’t realise.

Eddy
Yeah.

John
Chase that Feeling by Hilltop Hoods.

Eddy
It’s a good tune.

Eddy
Yeah, it’s a good, like.

Eddy
Yeah, it’s just.

Eddy
It’s a feel good tune, that one.

John
And.

John
And something that, you know, I feel that everyone’s pretty happy being an Australian track.

John
And.

John
And yeah, I’ve never had a bad reaction to that either.

John
It goes really well into.

John
What’s the song?

John
I play it with the Fat boy Slim Weapon of Choice.

Eddy
That’s a good show.

Eddy
Yeah, Weapon Choice is a great one.

John
Paulo Ville francais by Art vs Science.

John
I had to make sure I nailed that accent there.

John
And of course, number one, Little Iron Man.

John
So really, apart from Uprising by Muse, which probably is the.

John
The weakest of those, that’s a really.

Aleks
Strong, solid 100 2009.

Aleks
Yeah.

Eddy
Do you still kind of keep an eye on the hottest 100 these days, John?

John
Funnily enough, as you two know, I DJ the local Blue Light disco, which keeps me current with.

John
With music.

John
So for that, yeah, I keep an eye on the aria charts, the hottest 100, but also these days the TikTok charts as well.

Eddy
Yeah.

John
So when we do it, when we’re doing this podcast in 2050, we’ll be referring to the TikTok charts as well.

John
As we look back at years that were.

Aleks
It’s like when you get a really random request over and over, you’re like, must be on TikTok.

Aleks
And you look it up.

Eddy
Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Aleks
Why is this song coming back?

John
The classic for me at the Blue Light is FE!N by Travis Scott.

Eddy
Oh, yeah.

John
On paper, I would have no idea what that is, but they all go bananas to it.

Eddy
Yeah, See, I’ve never played it, but I know that every, you know, school disco or, you know, Blue Light, all that kind of thing, that it’s like the advice on the groups that we’re honest, like, play this song and, you know, strap yourself in.

Aleks
Yeah.

John
I just real.

John
I just dawned on me how uncool I’ve made myself sound as a wedding DJ.

John
DJ in the local 8 to 13 year old blue light.

Aleks
No.

Aleks
Can I just say, I think it’s actually a great.

Aleks
I think it’s a great thing to do because it does keep you super on top of new music, which frankly, we’re getting older, but our couples aren’t True.

Aleks
So it’s a really good thing to stay on top of it.

Aleks
And we do keep our eye on TikToks.

Eddy
Yeah.

Aleks
Because you do say current.

Eddy
You have to stay current and think.

Eddy
Thankfully, TikTok also includes tracks that are older as well.

Eddy
So like the Abbott and stuff.

Eddy
They trend.

Eddy
Which is great because my.

Eddy
I guess my fear is that I’ll rock up to a few weddings one day and one after the other.

Eddy
I might think I’m just getting too old for this.

Aleks
It’s your time to shine up.

Aleks
Shine up.

Eddy
Shine up.

Aleks
I was gonna say something about boots.

Aleks
Nice hang up.

John
Can sometimes feel so risky playing new stuff as well.

John
But you pull it out and you get the reaction and it’s all worth it.

Eddy
Yes.

Eddy
That’s why I like artists like Wuki etc that do the remixes of tracks like My Girl.

Eddy
So you know, the oldies again, you’ve got to.

Eddy
You’ve got to put yourself in good stead early on with the older crowd because then they’re happy to kind of go along with you for the journey when you eventually get to Dom Dolla or something.

John
Yeah.

John
And your Sgt Slicks and Cyrils of the world as well as well.

John
Certainly.

Eddy
Oh, the Cyril.

Eddy
Go Cyril.

John
Yeah.

Aleks
And I guess to sum this up, if you have a DJ instead of a Spotify playlist, we.

Aleks
If we see the reaction isn’t quite what we had expected or wanted, we can just mix out out and play something else.

Aleks
It’s not the end of the world.

Aleks
It’s a minute.

Eddy
Yeah.

Eddy
Try to do that computer.

Aleks
Yeah.

Aleks
Probably can read it.

Aleks
If you’re listening to this in 2050, you’re probably like, yeah, that was like 2030, you losers.

Aleks
Yeah.

John
Yeah.

Aleks
You vintage losers.

Eddy
Yeah.

Aleks
All right, well, John’s getting his pizza soon and this has been so much fun.

Aleks
Hey.

Eddy
Yeah, it really has.

Aleks
Good call having guests on.

Aleks
And John, tell us where people can find you, how the they can get.

John
You can find me online@simply www.celebrant.melbourne and at Celebrant John on the Instagram.

John
Or just come around to my house and say hi and have some pizza.

Eddy
And what a good domain name, by the way.

Aleks
Yeah, he’s got a few.

John
Yeah.

John
Yeah, I.

John
I can’t.

John
I’m not.

John
I’m certainly not the.

John
The oldest or longest serving celebrant in.

John
In Melbourne.

John
But when I came along and bought Celibate Melbourne, I thought, take that one.

Eddy
That’s awesome.

Eddy
I love that.

Eddy
It’s like your version of having the bitcoin.

Eddy
It’s all about the domain.

John
Yeah.

Aleks
He’s like almost Almost.

Aleks
Almost.

John
Yeah.

John
No, I wish I spent that dollar in 2009.

Eddy
Me, too.

Aleks
We all do.

Eddy
No, but it’s been.

Eddy
It’s been wonderful having you on.

Eddy
And we’ve actually recorded this on video as well, which is great.

Eddy
So hopefully it all works out.

Eddy
But we might even be able to pop this on YouTube potentially.

Eddy
I don’t know.

John
I like it.

Aleks
Yeah.

Eddy
Some little snippets for our socials.

Aleks
If I’d known, I would have turned my face fake tan on my body, but not on my face.

Aleks
Oh, well, it is what it is.

Eddy
I wasn’t.

Aleks
No one else mentioned anything.

Aleks
Okay, It’s.

John
Everything’s fine, Alex.

John
Everything’s good.

Aleks
Everything’s under control.

Eddy
And I’m gonna have to just drop.

John
One more in here as well, because it would be rude not to, but.

John
Riverside by Sydney Sampson.

Eddy
Oh, yes.

Aleks
Nine.

Eddy
Wow.

Eddy
What a year this was.

Aleks
This was a really good year.

Eddy
This is the.

Eddy
I think this is the best year we’ve done yet so far, for sure.

John
Thanks for letting me pick it.

Eddy
Pleasure.

Eddy
I’m glad we didn’t do 2005.

Aleks
Screw you, 2005.

Aleks
We’ll come back.

Eddy
What have they got?

Aleks
Yeah.

Aleks
Nothing.

Aleks
Absolutely nothing.

Eddy
Beautiful yet.

Eddy
I guess my last question to you, John, is what kind of pizza do you like?

John
Well, as the two of you know, but your listeners probably aren’t aware, I’m a vegetarian.

John
So what I’d go with is a.

John
Tonight, it will be a margarita, and it will have mushrooms on it, it will have potato on it, it will have pine nuts on it, and it will have roasted capsicum.

Eddy
And what on earth would you call such a creation?

John
It’s a margarita with mushroom and potato and pine nuts.

John
And roasted capsicum is what I’ll go with.

Eddy
We can workshop the name, but they.

John
Charge you a shitload with extras.

John
Whereas if it was something that had.

John
It was all that and it had chicken on it, you say without the chicken, and it would be like nine bucks cheaper.

Aleks
Discrimination.

Eddy
How they make the money.

Aleks
Next time, get some roasted capsicum in a jar, roast some pine nuts on the frying pan, chop up some mushrooms.

John
You two have been to a restaurant.

John
It is always better than what you can make at home.

Aleks
Yeah, I know.

Eddy
That is true.

Aleks
We’re gonna trust the people that do.

John
This for a living, as people should with us.

Aleks
Beautiful way.

Eddy
Great way.

Eddy
Yep.

Aleks
Amazing.

Aleks
Before we go off on another tangent.

Aleks
Hey.

Eddy
Yep.

Eddy
Well, this has been the longest episode so far in this particular season, so round of applause for John Edney celebrant, DJ extraordinaire.

Aleks
He’s an mc, too.

Eddy
And MC too.

Aleks
Yep.

Aleks
Wonderful.

Aleks
Thank you.

Eddy
Wonderful.

Aleks
Enjoy the weekend.

Aleks
Thank you for.

Aleks
Thank you to John, and thank you to everyone for listening.

Aleks
As always, let us know what you think.

Aleks
Like, subscribe, do all the things that we meant to tell you to do.

Aleks
Is that it?

Aleks
Like, follow.

Eddy
Anything else to add at this late hour, John?

John
No.

John
You’ll have me here for hours.

Aleks
He’s hungry.

John
And wrap it up.

Eddy
He’s hangry.

Aleks
Yeah, he’s angry.

Aleks
All right, thanks, guys.

Aleks
Till next time.

Aleks
See ya.

Eddy
Bye.

Aleks
Thanks for tuning in, and we hope you loved this episode.

Eddy
If you did love this episode, don’t forget to subscribe and leave a review on Spotify, Apple Music, or a podcast service of your choice.
